In the project framework, UNIGE, in the recent months, focused on the development of appropriate protocols for inducing reproduction in controlled conditions in Patella ferruginea.
Therefore, a more comprehensive literature search was performed on techniques applied on species of the same genus or related. A first protocol was drafted, which is currently undergoing testing and applying optimization to co-geneeric species, common and readily found along the Ligurian coast.
In particular, the team is working on Patella caerulea, which was found to be ready for spawning.
Early results are encouraging
- Spawning of gametes was induced by physical and chemical stress, without causing any mortality of the treated organisms;
- The first larvae were obtained.
